Ceramides
Ceramides are lipids found naturally in the outermost layer of the skin and a central part of the skin barrier. In skincare, they are used to support the barrier and help the skin feel hydrated and supple.
Suits
Dry, tight and sensitive skin, and skin that feels worn after cold, wind or dry indoor air.
Time of day
Morning and evening, ideally as the final caring step
Works well with
Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane and cholesterol. They also work well in a routine with retinol or acids, as a nourishing layer.
What isCeramides?
Ceramides are lipids (fats) that, together with cholesterol and free fatty acids, fill the spaces between the cells in the skin's outermost layer. Cosmetics use both nature-identical and plant-based variants.
What is it used for?
They are used in formulations developed to care for the skin barrier, often in creams for dry, tight or sensitive skin.
Be careful with
Ceramides are generally well tolerated. Rich creams may feel too heavy for very oily skin; in that case, choose a lighter texture.
Good to know
Ceramides work in concert with cholesterol and fatty acids, among others.
