Glow & radiance

The light that makes skin look well rested isn't a shine you put on. It is light bouncing off a smooth, hydrated skin surface. Here we explain what makes skin dull, what actually gives radiance – and why sunscreen is your most important glow product.

THE VÉNAT SKIN GUIDE
In brief

What radiance is

Light reflected evenly off a smooth, hydrated surface. The smoother the surface and the more even the tone, the more radiance.

What makes skin dull

Dehydration, a build-up of dead skin cells, uneven pigmentation, lack of sleep and sun.

What helps

Hydration, gentle cleansing, ingredients for a more even tone – and sunscreen every day.

01

Why skin looks dull

Skin renews itself constantly. New cells form at the bottom and travel up to the surface, where they eventually shed. When this process slows down – as it does with age – more dead cells build up on the surface. The surface becomes uneven and light scatters instead of reflecting.

Dehydration does the same. Skin that lacks water becomes less smooth and more dull, even if it doesn't feel dry.

The third factor is skin tone. Uneven pigmentation from sun, old spots or hormones makes skin look less clear.

02

Sunscreen – the underrated glow product

UV radiation is one of the biggest causes of uneven skin tone, pigment spots and skin losing firmness over the years. It happens gradually, even on grey days.

Daily sunscreen is therefore the product that does most for radiance in the long run. Everything else you do for a more even tone works better when the skin is protected at the same time.

03

Small habits for more radiance

  • Massage while you cleanse. A minute of gentle massage feels good and makes cleansing more thorough.
  • Moisturise slightly damp skin. That way humectants have water to hold on to.
  • Sleep. Lack of sleep often shows first as greyer, more tired-looking skin.
  • Be careful with exfoliation. A little can give a smoother surface – too much leaves skin irritated and red.
04

Myths about glow

Myth

Glow means shiny skin.

The facts

Glow is light reflecting off a smooth, hydrated surface. Shine usually comes from sebum and looks different – more oily than fresh.

Myth

You have to exfoliate every day to get a glow.

The facts

Daily exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier and leave skin red and sensitive. For most people, a couple of times a week is plenty – if that.

Myth

The right product gives instant results.

The facts

Hydration makes a difference straight away, but a more even skin tone takes weeks. Give your routine at least a month before you judge it.

Common questions about glow

Vad betyder lyster i huden?

How long until my skin tone looks more even?

You'll feel the hydration straight away, but for skin tone you need to think in weeks. Studies on niacinamide usually measure the effect after eight to twelve weeks – and that assumes daily sunscreen.

Can I wear sunscreen under make-up?

Yes. Let the sunscreen settle for a moment before applying make-up. A stick is also handy to carry with you and top up during the day.

What's the difference between glow and highlighter?

A highlighter places light-reflecting particles on the surface. A glow from the skin itself comes from a smooth, hydrated surface. The two combine beautifully.
